How would you explain the relationship of adding and subtracting integers? How can you explain why subtracting a negative number is just like adding the absolute value of the number? Solve: 6 - (-9) = ? Give examples.
1) The relationship of adding and subtracting integers have two simple rules. A) Adding the negative number would the same as subtracting the positive number. Ex. 6 + -3, it would be 6 - 3 = +3 B) Subtracting the negative number would be the same as adding the positive number. Ex. 6 - (-3), would be 6 + 3 = +9 2) Because I'll be going to the right on the number line. 3) 6 - (-9); 6 + 9 = +15
The relationship for adding and subtracting integers are a bit different. For example, -3+(-6) you would add the absolute values, say you put them in between |-3|=3 and |-6|=6 making the answer be -9. Another situation would be 4+(-2). |4|=4 and |-2|=2 making the answer 2. There's really not much subtracting if there's one negative number plus a positive it would come out depending a negative or not, the greater value sign is what you keep. So this answer 6-(-9)=+15
